Wait, Whut? NYCFC Quietly Picks Up 8 Points in Their Last 5

Share with a friend, neighbor or the world!

It might not be much, but the New York City Football Club has picked up 8 points in their last 5 matches after a 2-0 win at home last night against the also offensively challenged New England Revolution. On a night where the team absolutely needed a win on the second game of a 5 game homestand, Agustin Ojeda picked up both his first NYCFC goal as well as his first MLS goal with a right footed shot after a rebound shortly into the second half. Following that Julian Fernandez sealed it in added time to put the club up 2-0 and finalizing the three points.

Chances are, you knew that already so my focus will be on other stats instead to add a tick of uniqueness to this writeup. But first, Ojeda’s goal was gold:

Head Coach Nick Cushing was happy with the win, but stressed that this match was too close for too long, stating that it easily could have ended 1-1 or worse, a loss. You can check out the press conference here:

Next up, the club will hit the midway point in their homestand, as they’re back at Citi Field to face off against DC United, including former goalkeeper-turned goalkeeper coach Cody Mizell. Personally, I’m happy for the man, he’s got 3 kids under the age of 5 so I’ve always rooted for him as a person there. Anyway –

4 STATS:

1) This marked the first clean sheet for Matt Freese this year after having 5 in 10 matches last year.

2) The club had 17 shots in this match, marking the third time this year that the team has had at least 15 shots in a match, going 2W-0L-1D when that happens. Conversely they’re 0W-4L-1D when under 15 shots. Weird, more shots = more likely for points.

3) After this match, the team is now 15th in the league in shots per match at 12.57. By comparison, DC United that they’re facing on Saturday is second in the league at 16.57.

4) Facing DC United, their office is basically Christian Benteke and everyone else. Of the team’s 10 goals, Benteke has 5 of them. In two matches against NYCFC (both in 2022), the Congolese forward has 1 goal on two shots.
