The New York City Football club flexed some offensive muscle tonight as the club ran out to a 3 goal lead before defeating FC Dallas at Citi Field 3-1 on a rainy Queens night. In the final matchup of a three game homestand NYCFC fired off 6 shots on goal while goalkeeper Luis Barraza stopped 7 of 8 shots to vault themselves to 4th place in the East.

After having a goal by Gabriel Perreira from outside the box get called off for offsides at the 16th minute, Midfielder Santiago Rodriguez got the scoring underway late in the first half after an unexpected back pass turned into a turnover right to Rodriguez, who fired a right footed shot to the left side of the net for a late half 44th minute goal. The second half got scoring underway quickly just five minutes in, with Perreira this time providing the assist with a right footed cross to Rodriguez who buried it home for the 2-0 score.

Scoring for NYCFC was capped just five minutes later after Perreria fired a quick shot that was saved by the right hand of FC Dallas goalkeeper Maarten Paes the rebound found Talles Magno who chipped it home to put New York City up by three. In the end however, Luis Barraza was denied his 2nd clean sheet of the year after a late goal by Jose Martinez got the Texas team on the board, but in the end, it was NYCFC’s second straight win.

Next up it’s a reunion as NYCFC travels north of the border to take on Toronto, and former captain Sean Johnson. Toronto sits in 12th in the East with 6 ties in the season, including 3 of those ties and their lone win at home.

4 NOTES

1) This was the first two goal game for Santiago Rodriguez in his career. Currently sitting at 3 goals on the season, his high mark with the club is 4, having scored that last season.

2) Luis Barraza is quietly having the best season of his career after starting all nine games this season. His 78.4% pass percentage is current highest in the league with goalkeepers with at least 7 starts this season.

3) NYCFC and Toronto are split nearly right down the middle as possible with TFC going 8-7-7 during their history. The last six matches prove that point, going 2-2-2 with both teams wins being 1 goal victories.

4) With Sean Johnson expected to start for Toronto it will be interesting to see how both clubs react. Johnson was a leader for the team both on and off the pitch and speaking from experience, a really awesome guy I was disappointed to say goodbye to when he signed with Toronto. But that’s the business. On the season Johnson has 27 saves in 40 shots on goal for a 67.5% win percentage with his new club.
