The New York City Football Club ended a difficult (some would say horrid) opening month of the season with a 1-1 draw against a Messi-less Inter-Miami squad. For a team with just three points in it’s first 5 matches goalkeeper Matt Freese showed again why the club signed him to an extension, turning aside 5 or 6 (including a few at point blank range) to keep his team in it and earn the point.

However that didn’t mean that NYCFC didn’t fall behind yet again and be forced to play catch-up. Just 14 minutes in Luis Suarez broke the guy after a Julian Gressil set piece put the Herons in front. However the score would be knotted at one about 20 minutes later as Alonso Martinez took a right footed shot across goal and buried it in the left of the net for the 1-1 score. It was Martinez’s first goal in the league and ended up being the final goal of the night.

And with that, the first month of the MLS 2024 season comes to a close for the New York City Football Club. Next up is both the start of a 5 game homestead and their first match of the year at Citi Field as the Pidgeons face off against a goal stingy Atlanta United squad on April 6th.

4 Stats

1) While Goalkeeper Matt Freese has yet to pull a clean sheet this season his numbers have drastically improved thanks to a tighter front. After giving up 6 goals on 11 shots in the team’s first four, he’s now giving up just 2 in the past 12 shots (FC Cincinnati and Inter-Miami).

2) The Martinez goal was the team’s first one on the road this season. Last year they had 11 road goals in 17 matches.

3) The club picked up 2 Yellow Cards, giving them 12 on the year.

4) Facing Atlanta United next week, the United are stingy on goals allowed, at just 4 in 6 matches at the time of this writing. They are also 0W-2L-0D on the road this season.
