NJ Devils Add Trade Deadline Prize Timo Meier In Blockbuster Deal

The New Jersey Devils have acquired Forward Timo Meier from the San Jose Sharks in a deal that’s been weeks of waiting and wondering. The deal breaks down as follows (and it’s complicated):

Devils get: Forward Timo Meier (50 percent retained), Forward Timur Ibragimov, Defenseman Scott Harrington, Defenseman Santeri Hatakka, Goalie Zachary Emond & a 2024 fifth-round pick.

Sharks get: Forward Andreas Johnsson, Forward Fabian Zetterlund, Defenseman Nikita Okhotiuk, Defenseman Shakir Mukhamadullin, 2023 first-round pick, 2024 first-round pick (conditional), 2024 seventh-round pick.

Then if that’s not enough, the condition breaks down like this: Devils must reach East Conference Final in 2023 or 2024, and Meier plays in 50% of games in 2023, then it will become Top 10 lottery protected 2024 1st round pick. If those things do not happen, it becomes a 2024 2nd Round Pick.

With 12 Swiss players in the league, the deal will now give the New Jersey Devils 4 of them, joining goaltender Akira SchmidJonas Siegenthaler and captain Nico Hischier while also giving the Devils an additional offensive threat. In 57 games, Meier has 31 goals and 21 assists.

This trade makes the Devils an absolute powerhouse in the East, a trade that needed to happen if the Devils want to make it far in the post season.
