A week after the New York City Football Club fired off 5 goals at Red Bull Arena as the home team, that same club failed to put a goal in net this time around, being ousted from the Leagues Cup in a 1-0 loss to the New York Red Bulls. The team struggled to keep RBNY out of their zone, finally going from bending to breaking when at the 28th minute Tayvon Gray took a yellow card inside the box allowing Midfielder Omir Fernandez to take the ensuing penalty kick to the right corner of the net for the 1-0 Red Bull score. Fernandez will be remembered by NYCFC fans for scoring the only goal earlier in the season in the 1-0 RBNY win over NYCFC back in May.
The second half started out with more passion than what was seen in the first half, forcing a free kick just outside the box and a corner inside the first 5 minutes. However in spite of the occasional pressure after those first few minutes to start the half the team struggled until very late to even got a shot on goal with a late scoring chance by new acquisition Mounsef Bakrar directly on goal however coming up empty.
With the loss, NYCFC is eliminated from the Leagues Cup, seeing the New York Red Bulls advancing to take on the Philadelphia Union in Subaru Park on Monday, after DoopNation squeaked out a 0-0 (5-4) shootout win at home against visiting DC United.
4 NOTES
1) NYCFC has struggled playing in Red Bull Arena as the road team, going 1-12-3 in now 16 matches and never having beaten them anywhere when it comes to Cup play.
2) Part of that success for RBNY is goalkeeper Carlos Coronel as he has fired off 5 Clean Sheets against the Cityzens.
3) This was Matt Freese’s first back to back start since April last year while with Philadelphia. In 5 matches this season with NYCFC he’s saved 15 of 21 for a 71.4 save percentage.
4) The team will have some time off now that they’re out of League’s Cup. Their next match will be on August 20th at Citi Field against Minnesota United. It will also be the reunion with former 2021 MLS Cup alumni Ismael Tajouri-Shradi, who has been with the Loons since the start of July.
