The New York City Football Club managed to sneak past a tough New England Revolution team in a 1-1 (7-6) shootout win at Foxboro to move on to face Tigres-UNAL on Tuesday night at Red Bull Arena. The match against the Revs absolutely could have gone their way, but here we are, seeing an NYCFC club moving onto the round of 16 against a VERY tough Mexican squad that thus far in Liga MX have only given up 1 goal in 4 matches, to say nothing of the rolling they’ve done thus far in Leagues Cup.
So what’s up with this team? What is NYCFC in for at “home” at Red Bull Arena in what will probably be a crowd that’s 80% Tigres fans? Here’s some knowledge to prep you:
5 FACTS on Tigres-UNAL
1) They’re currently third in Liga MX out of 18 teams, going 3W-0L-1D, scoring 6 goals and as mentioned only giving up 1 thus far.
2) The team peppers their opponents with shots. They’re also 3rd in the league, averaging 16.5 shots per match and tied for 2nd with 5.25 shots on goal per game.
3) In Leagues Cup, the same system still works. In 3 matches they’ve outscored their opponents 5-1 and have never trailed.
4) The club’s full name is actually Club de Fútbol Tigres de la Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León. They’re 64 years old, originally founded in 1960 and prior to that under the name of Jabatos de Neuvo Lion.
5) The team has won the Liga MX title 8 times, including a full 5 times since 2015.
How will the team do against Tigres? Let me know your thoughts and as always, stay awesome.
